I’ve been tagged by Catriona to share a piece of scripture that I continue to go back to time after time, the post originated from Andy Goodliff (both are Baptist’s who blog and I visit both of their blogs regularly for inspiration and thoughtful theology).
I could think of so many pieces of scripture that has effected my understanding of faith/has been a source of comfort through difficult times. The verse that I point to as my ‘calling verse’ and the one that has remained with me since God’s call to ministry is: 1Samuel 16:7 ‘Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’ Let me remind you of the context of the verse; Samuel is seeking out whom God has chosen to be the next King of Israel after Saul died. He goes to Jesse’s house and assumes God will choose a strong, brave looking King – instead God chose the youngest boy who was looking after the sheep. I take great comfort in the fact that God chooses the most unlikely characters to lead and look after his people. Not only that but I’m also challenged not to make assumptions about people by their outer appearance neither by what they look like or behave like. God has taught me a few lessons in this! Instead there is a challenge, I think, to try and see people how God sees them – that means getting to know them and finding that something which is good, and to kindle that.
